OVERVIEW: 

This is a lesson, documents, and data package that illustrates how GIS can be used to 
teach history. Using the incredible expedition of explorers Lewis and Clark, this package 
provides GIS data that is easily investigated with the ArcVoyager U.S. Reference Map project. 

LEWCLARK.PDF, besides containing the package's lesson, provides data documentation and other
background information.


MATERIALS NEEDED:

-  ArcVoyager (SE) or ArcView GIS (or ArcExplorer) software installed (see below for more)
-  Activity sheet "Mapping the Lewis and Clark Expedition, 1804-1806"
-  Contents of the LEWCLARK\DATA directory
-  Supplemental ArcVoyager SE support materials in the LEWCLARK\VOYSTART directory


SOFTWARE NOTES:

If you do not have ArcView, ArcExplorer, or ArcVoyager SE, you can order a free copy of a CD that 
contains ArcVoyager SE at http://www.esri.com/industries/k-12/k-12form.html. 

If ArcVoyager SE is new to you (such as installing it or learning its basic operations), see the 
materials contained in the LEWCLARK\VOYSTART directory.

The file LEWCLARK.PDF contains instructions for completing the activity as well as additional
explanatory information. It can be viewed using the Adobe Acrobat Reader (which is downloadable 
from Adobe at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/alternate.html).

NOTE: Transfer the data (and possibly the other documents) to all computers you will be using (or place
them on the network). Place the data in a location (e.g., C:\LEWCLARK\DATA) that will be consistent from 
machine to machine and easy for students to find.
